Scalable Production: Why Productivity and Resilience Belong Together
How can industrial companies increase their production capacity without simply adding more machines and personnel – while at the same time ensuring that increasingly connected production environments remain resilient and compliant?
This was the focus of Dr. Marc Heggemann, MBA, Chief Digital Competence Center at cross-ING, during his presentation at all about automation Zurich on 26 August 2026.
From 40 to 70 machines per year
Using a real-world example, Marc demonstrated how a plant manufacturer increased its production output from around 40 to 70 machines per year. The main bottleneck was not the machinery itself, but the handovers between engineering, production and logistics.
The cross-ING approach: Don’t start with digitalisation. Improve the workflow first.
The processes were first analysed and optimised before establishing digital continuity and integrating suitable tools. In less than a year, production capacity was nearly doubled – with more transparent handovers, improved delivery reliability and fewer friction losses.
Productivity needs resilience
However, increased digitalisation also means greater connectivity, a larger attack surface and more regulatory responsibility. Requirements such as the Cyber Resilience Act (CRA), Machinery Regulation (MVO), IEC 62443 and NIS2 are therefore becoming increasingly relevant.
cross-ING follows a structured approach:
Relevance → Threat → Compliance → Implementation → Audit
This creates clear priorities, manageable risks and auditable resilience.
The key message of the presentation: Scalable production needs both – productivity and resilience.
Because production does not scale simply by adding more machines. It scales through better collaboration between people, processes and technology.
